Samsung Doesn't Have Symbian In Its Plans

Bad news for Symbian as Samsung’s head of marketing, YH Lee, has confirmed that the company has not planned any Symbian devices for the moment, but if there is enough consumer demand it will consider launching Symbian devices again. Without Symbian, Samsung will be focusing on Android to fulfill its smartphone needs while its own bada OS will be used to bring a smartphone-like experience to lower-end phones. Samsung is also planning to make Windows Phone 7 (WP7) devices targeted at business users.

ViewSonic 7-inch Android-powered ViewPad 7 Goes Official

While most folks were expecting the major announcements to come during the IFA, ViewSonic has made the 7-inch ViewPad 7 official before the event. The Android 2.2 Froyo device will be powered by a 700MHz ARM CPU and will sport an 800 x 480 pixel resolution display and shouldn’t be going for more than £350 ($543) in the UK. Other features of the ViewPad 7 include a 3-megapixel front-facing and VGA back-facing camera, 3G connectivity to support both phone and data connections, a full-sized SIM card slot, and microSD card expansion. Surprisingly though, despite the inclusion of a SIM card slot and mobile phone functionality, it lacks an earpiece, so you probably wouldn’t want to ditch your mobile phone for the ViewPad 7 anytime soon. Review units of the ViewPad 7 should begin to appear in October 2010.

Smartphones Safer Than PC for Now

Smartphones Safer Than PC for Now

Despite the growing catalog of official third-party apps available on app stores like the iOS App Store and Android Market and apps that are available as sideloaded content, a recent study finds that smartphones, for the time being, are still safer than PC against malicious codes and threats. There are two main reasons for why cell phones are remaining safe. The first is that most mobile OS environments use a sandbox to keep third party apps isolated and require explicit permission to be granted from the user for these apps to exchange information. The second is that developers must sign up and there is a code signing process before apps can be sold in these app stores.

Because smartphone environments are different than their PC counterparts, security firm Symantec is instead focusing on developing mobile management tools for users instead of anti-malware software.
