Elonex has just revealed a plethora of tablet devices that are touted to go on sale in the UK, where they have been priced at affordable levels. We're talking about £99 to £159, and at those sticker prices, chances are pretty high that interest will be strong. The eTouch line will start from 5-inches in size, going all the way to 10-inches if you need something larger. Powered by the Google Android operating system, they might come across as cheap substitutes for the Apple iPad, but will utilize a widescreen display instead of the iPad’s 4:3 screen. Each purchase will come with keyboard docks to further enhance their functionality when attached.

Well, what did you expect a tablet device to look like? The LG Optimus Pad was spotted recently, where it supposedly comes with superior performance in a thinner and lighter form factor when compared to its rivals - no prizes for guessing whether the Apple iPad is lumped into that category or not. Since it runs on the Android platform, it would be nice to know whether Froyo (Android 2.2) is included right out of the box, or will consumers have to wait for an update in due time? We will keep a keen eye out for the Optimus Pad when IFA kicks off later this week in full force.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab has been spotted in video and photo leaks to the death, but here's something slightly different - we're talking about a CDMA model which can be spotted simply because of a sticker located on the side of the unit. Expected to roll out with the Android 2.2 Froyo operating system, the CDMA Galaxy Tab has been touted to feature strong speakers and a slow-working GPS according to those who have seen it in the flesh. As for Flash, it purportedly runs like a "dream", and might just be able to kick off a serious rivalry with the Apple iPad.

The Hanvon Touchpad B10 has undergone an unboxing process in Germany, where it will retail for €771.24 a pop. So far initial impressions of it have been pretty good, where a user touted that it was one of the best tablets he has ever used - without making a reference on whether he had any experience with the Apple iPad or not. According to the same user, it takes just 39 seconds to boot up, and is flexible enough to run a slew of applications without being bogged down. There is no word on whether the Hanvon Touchpad B10 will arrive Stateside, but we don't suppose you can always go for a grey import.

It is rather strange that Sharp’s President Mikio Katayama has touted their upcoming e-reader to be a rival for the Apple iPad - considering the iPad isn't even a dedicated e-reader in the first place, but rather more of a tablet. This is one interesting boast that we hope will not end up as just hot air since the consumers will win in the end. According to Sharp, this new product is being prepared to hit the market before the year is over and it remains to be seen whether it will make it in time before the frenzied holiday shopping season begins. We do know that their e-book reader will utilize a color LCD display while using a new file format for e-books known as XMDF. XMDF is a new development where it will utilize video and music alongside basic text for added oomph. There are even whispers going around that 3D capability on this e-book reader might be a possibility - nothing strange about that considering Sharp is behind the Nintendo 3DS display.

IFA 2010 is the platform where Samsung will introduce their much leaked tablet device which runs on the Android 2.2 operating system. This means we will find out for good whether it is the Galaxy Tab, or the Tape, as the 7" tablet will be equipped with a Super AMOLED display that aims to go up head to head against the Apple iPad when released. Of course, those who are interested in the hardware will be pleased to know that this tablet sports two cameras, 3G connectivity, GPS navigation capability and Wi-Fi connectivity among others. Let's just hope that the price is right, and that the Android Market will pick up the pace in order to keep up with Apple's App Store if the Galaxy Tab were to have a fighting chance as good hardware alone isn't enough these days to mount a good challenge.

Microsoft is exploring the possibilities of a rear keyboard thanks to its RearType research project, where input is located behind the screen. It is the first to do so with a keyboard, and initial in-house tests have shown that the typing speed is on par with a touchscreen capable device including the Apple iPad, which is roughly the equivalent of 15 words per minute. How will this change the future of computing as well as other portable devices? It really depends on whether the other hardware manufacturers will bite on the idea, and will consumers sort of take a step backwards, moving away from virtual keyboards to physical ones (even though the location has now changed to the back)?

The TV is a pretty passive tool - all you need to do is sit back, enjoy whatever that is being broadcast into your living room while you munch on some chips and drink a can of soda. Do you wish it could be a more interactive experience? For those who answered in the affirmative but do not want to get embroiled in the world of video games, there is the MetaMirror software platform concept which allows you to access content relative to the show you’re viewing at that moment. Since most things have secondary content these days, it will definitely make watching your favorite sitcom a whole lot more interesting. There are no mechanics on how this is achieved, but we suppose your device would need to share some kind of transmission with the TV in order to know which page it is on, and you will probably be connected to the Internet somehow on said device in order to pull in more relevant information for you to play around with. The Apple iPad was chosen to be the model device here.

A tablet a day keeps the doctor away - which tablet are we talking about? Well, definitely not the kind that cures ailments save for one - Internet withdrawal symptoms. The tablet craze is well and truly underway, where Flat Computing has introduced its 10.2" FlatPad A10 that comes with a 1024 x 600 resolution resistive touchscreen display, powered by a 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor alongside 256MB RAM and 2GB of internal memory. No FroYo here, just Android 2.1, where it will play nice with the built-in accelerometer (hooray, that means games like Teeter running on it), Wi-Fi connectivity a microSD memory card slot. You won't find it in the same league with the Apple iPad where battery life is concerned, as its 2400mAh battery maxes out at 5 hours with Wi-Fi turned on, while it can go for another 2 hours with Wi-Fi off.
According to Flat Computing, the Android 2.2 update will come sometime this month. Good news, no?
