LG is pushing its smart TVs at IFA in Germany. The idea is that TVs are going to become “computers” that can browse the web and use web services like Yahoo, Picassa or YouTube. With the change in function, comes a change in user interface. LG is now using a magic wand remote that allows users to point and click instead of moving step by step in four directions. That’s an big improvement for an interactive TV. The television can also stream content from a local media server via Ethernet.
This is an interesting evolution, but we have to wonder if it takes away the simplicity of using a TV - it’s hard to tell without testing it. Clearly, studies have shown that users do like the TV because it’s simple… maybe even “mindless”. Amusingly, many “smart” TVs don’t yet have a functional and interactive TV guide… let’s hope that this is not the case for the new LG TVs. More info at LGE/ifa2010

Who says that GPS navigation systems are just meant for drivers only? The Garmin Edge 800 caters for cyclists who are on a mission and require accurate information on the dot in the most simple manner possible. Boasting a touchscreen display to keep up with the times, the Edge 800 will merge the most popular aspects of the industry-leading Edge 500 and Edge 705 while throwing in an updated intuitive touchscreen interface. Among the new mapping options include Garmin’s BaseCamp route planning and BirdsEye Satellite Imagery. The Edge 800 is smart enough to track all performance data, where you can view it over a 2.6” display while tracking speed, distance, time, GPS position, elevation, calories burned, climb and descent. Another advantage would be having no need for calibration, letting you use the Edge 800 on different bicycles in a jiffy. [Press Release]

I think we all know that mass transit can be improved, but this idea for civilian transport is pulled straight out of science fiction.
Basically, this is a rail train that looks like a monorail, but it has two rails. Each of these rails are on the side of the road, which allows [...]

About the time I go reorganizing my bookshelf I start seriously considering purchasing bookends. I just tend to grumble about it due to the lack of versatility that they come with. Most bookends can really only hold up one side of books at a time. However, these fancy Bendit Bookends are a whole lot more [...]

You might not have heard about King Jim before if you happen to live in North Amerca, but for the uninitiated, it does boast a pretty mean line of POMERA portable yet basic word processors. The Mamemo device you see here is slightly different despite retaining the company’s tradition of simplicity, being a perpetual digital version of a notepad that lets you jot a whole load of to-do items as well as ideas or dreams – as long as you no are not limited to 99 ’sheets’. A trio of AAA batteries power the Mamemo, which translates to around 7 months of juice thanks to the use of a basic monochrome touchscreen display. You might think twice about picking this up though considering the $67 price tag which might net you a cheap PDA (if they still sell those) or second-hand smartphone.
